As Thanksgiving approaches, there are many things to be thankful for. At Colorado Community Health Network (CCHN), we are especially thankful for the impact that Colorado’s Community Health Centers (CHCs) have on their communities and on the state.
CHCs in Colorado provide a medical home to over 600,000 people in Colorado. They provide comprehensive care that includes medical, dental, pharmacy, and behavioral health services. With 18 CHCs running 159 clinics, many of these clinics are located in areas with shortages of health care professionals or areas with transportation barriers. Without CHCs, Coloradans living in these communities would not be able to access the care they need.
Not only do Colorado CHCs provide greater access to care, but they also provide affordable care to some of the state’s most medically underserved people. Many of their patients would not otherwise be able to afford health services; 95% of their patients earn at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Additionally, 40% of CHC patients are uninsured. Without CHCs, these Coloradans would not be getting the care they need.
In addition to the significant impact CHCs have on their patients, they also strengthen the state’s economy. CCHN’s new report shows that in 2011, CHCs provided 3,621 jobs, and contributed $396 million to local economies. CHCs are good for the physical and mental health of their community members, and for the health of the state’s economy!
With all of these great impacts, we have much to be thankful for this November. CHCs are doing important work and having significant impacts on their communities throughout the state.
